Midori (Japanese Dictionary) App Reviews

My favorite Japanese app

Im living in Japan, and I rely on this app everyday. Its my favorite Japanese app by far. The interface is clean, the information shown is useful, and I find the translate feature more useful than google translate.

WIFI Connection needed

If you do not have a WIFI connection do not buy this App. Without a WIFI connection all you get is what looks liked lined writting paper. This is not a stand alone app. If you have a WIFI connection this is probably an outstanding program.

Almost perfect

This app is really amazing. The multiple ways to search (romaji, hiragana, or kanji radicals, is incredibly convenient. I use it almost every day, primarily for inputting new words to the bookmark/flash card section. The only problems I have are not about content, only usability. One is that if you searched for a kanji character using the writing option, you have to use the correct stroke order. Obviously this is ideal for learning, but can be challenging if one hasnt learned the order already. The other is that the flash cards only allow you to see the Japanese first, instead of offering English first as well. If there was the option to use either Japanese or English first, I fee like the language-learning benefit would be improved. Again, despite my tiny usability issues, overall this app is incredibly useful, and anyone interested in learning Japanese will definitely benefit from it!

An excellent dictionary

I use this app nearly every day and I love it. It is a worth while investment for Japanese learning and translating with more features than I take advantage of. I do wish, however, that keyboard shortcuts will be added for use with an iPad; that would really make this app perfect.

Yomiwa

Does the job of you need a kanji recognizer. This app is a dictionary nothing more and nothing less.

Best Japanese dictionary in app store

Midori is one of my two most used tools for Japanese study, the other being Anki. This is one of the best polished app Ive seen in the App Store. I also love that Midori lets you hyperlink to dictionary entries or the translate tab. Ive set up my Anki flashcards with direct links to Midori, which is very helpful for studying. Ive also used Midori extensively while traveling in Japan to look up words. I cant imagine not having it when I was traveling. The developer is also amazingly responsive to address issues that are raised, which is much appreciated.
