ITS FANTASTIC!!

I believe this is one of the most beautiful and well made app on the store. It works perfectly with no bugs,it recognizes all the kanjis i write by hand,its..WOW!! Thanks to developers!!

Great app for learning Japanese for all levels

I have been using this app for a while now, it is very useful and convenient! If it would have a real recording audio, this app would be perfect 100%! Developers really did a great job!

Kanji recognizer

I find that when I enter a reasonable facsimile of a kanji, it fails to recognize it. EVen if I draw 4 strokes, it will show me kanji that have more than 4 strokes. I wanted to use this app as a dictionary so that when I see kanji I can draw them and discover their meaning. Doesnt work, at least not for me. Perhaps Im doing something wrong -- in light of the very positive reviews. But it doesnt work for me. and maybe not for you. Caveat emptor

最高!

I use this dictionary countless times a day. I do a lot of Japanese self-study, and have downloaded many other dictionaries to see if theres one that Ill like better or use more than Midori. Ive never found one. Midori got me through all 60 levels of WaniKani, and has been very helpful in my kanji studies beyond. It has the most appealing and user-friendly format of any dictionary app I know. Its possible to look kanji up by Romaji, radical, and drawing. I have tons of bookmark categories, and use the flash card feature to study within them. Oh, it also has lists of kanji by usage frequency and grade level plus lists of vocabulary by grammatical type. Im going to remember even more features later, so please believe me when I say that Midori is an invaluable tool for studying the Japanese language. ( ¨̮ )/

Wonderful on iPad for serious study

Update: 9/3/2016: SKIP search is another insightful method. I am never disappointed with this app. Update 1/1/2015: Getting better and better...love to hear a word now! This is a wonderful study tool on the iPad (iPhone interface not tested) for the serious student. Use in conjunction with class or other books/programs to conquer this language! Very effective use of the 10" display. Written kanji recognition works well for all kanji tested (up to 12 strokes). With practice, you can learn the expected order when faced with an unknown. Use of bookmarks and the flashcard study tool is easy with the ability to set up multiple folders for different study groups. Very well done.

Essential for ex-pats in Japan

Midori has been a staple on the front-most home pages of my various iOS devices for over half a decade now. Ive spent a good amount of money trying other dictionaries, but have always fallen back on this one. Over the years it has served every purpose Ive needed from a Japanese-English reference tool with ease and accessibility, and I cannot recommend it enough for learners or expats alike. Fingers are crossed for a watch app now.

The king of Japanese dictionaries (for English speakers)

I tried so many dictionary apps many years ago, but the one that always was updated and being constantly improved was Midori. The developer is responsive to feedback and should be praised for his work. That said, I use this app every single day. Its worth paying for.

Best dictionary and study tool Ive found!

Hands down the best dictionary app Ive used for my Japanese studies! This app has so many great features from kanji drawing recognition, example sentences for most words, customizable folders and notes, a variety of lists that organize words and kanji, and more! I highly recommend it! Its been invaluable to me living here in Japan! The only thing that I would love to see added would be intonation marks so I wouldnt make mistakes when pronouncing similar words such as 橋 and 箸.

Good app

This is a good dictionary app. It looks nice, isnt slow, and has a lot of features. One thing I would like it to have is the ability to use the voice feature for words in the flash card list.

好用的日语学习软件!!

页面简洁看着舒服 词汇查询翻译的结果不会很奇怪 解释说明很清楚 还有许多实用的小功能 书签 笔记 flash card 很喜欢 对于我这种初学者非常有帮助!!

The best there is

Still the best dictionary out there for anyone learning Japanese. I use this app daily. Highly recommended!

Good

This app has a great design and I like how it incorporates the example sentences with the furigana - it looks really good. A big plus for me is that it can usually understand the kanji when I draw one for when Im reading a paper book and want to look something up and cant guess the kanjis reading. I also love the flash cards. It has beautiful animations and you can scroll back and forth and also test yourself using kanji, furigana, or English, or any combination as you like. Plus this app gets updates from the author unlike some other Japanese apps that were good but have been abandoned.

Best Japanese dictionary app and learning tool

Why? なぜ? ✨ fast and easy to look up words, save to lists, add notes

Perfect for studying.

This is the best app Ive found for translating Japanese and keeping track of vocabulary and learned words. I like how each kanji has a list of compounds so you know words you may frequently see that kanji in. It also shows what radicals are a part of each kanji. Being able to create vocabulary lists and flash cards is also great. Also the handwriting kanji recognition is really good even if you dont get the stroke order exactly right. This has been indispensable to me.

Three years of guidance and going strong!

I think if youre a serious student of Japanese, definitely buy this app. My classmates who also use this app agree wholeheartedly. I dont really do reviews, but this has been so useful I felt like it deserves a review. It might seem pricy, but for what it is, I think its a steal. The price does prevent many friends from trying it out, though. Basic pros and cons: ⭕️ Wide variety of dictionary entries ⭕️ Ample example sentences for more common words ⭕️ Lists available for JLPT, kanji, parts of speech, etc ⭕️ Translation function! ⭕️ Flash card type variety ⭕️ Clean interface ⭕️ Extremely convenient over traditional dictionaries ❌ Almost no example sentences available for less common words* ❌ Flashcards: cant review entire folders and sub folders, just individual ones ❌ Translation function tends to not recognize chunks of kana, usually just kanji ❌ Lack of the ability to write text into translation box by finger - has to be typed *They pull example sentences from a database, theyre not made by the app developers. --- I bought this app when it was on sale for about $7 back when I first studying Japanese three years ago. Im entering my fourth year of studying Japanese, and its probably my single most used resource when it comes to Japanese. I use the flash card option a lot for my classes (first in spaced-repetition mode to set a foundation, then random to drill). It has a wide variety of entries, and the name option is nice. There have been words that this dictionary lists that even native speakers didnt even know were words. The interface is quite aesthetically pleasing compared to other similar applications, which is why I choose this app over other apps that were free. The lists are a nice addition as well, though I dont use them that often (except for katakana, which I forget ... much too frequently). For the flash card system, I do wish there was an option to study an entire folder and its sub-folders, however. As of now, you can only do individual folders, and if you want to study everything in the encompassing folder, you have to bookmark a word into both. Nonetheless, its still a fantastic application to study with, and has a wide variety of words. Though itd be nice to have more example sentences, I realize this is more a problem with the database they get the sentences from than the app itself. I also do wish that some word compounds were available, but its not that big of a deal. The biggest lifesaver of all is perhaps the translation function, which translates large chunks of texts at a time. Its great for texts with kanji and such that you cant read. However, it doesnt translate kana: so if I were to write にほんごがすき, nothing would show up as translated, but 日本語が大好き does translate. I wish for larger chunks of text, you could write I to the translation box by hand like you would in the search section, but you cant. You can go around this by writing it into the search bar in the search section, or using Google Translates image/text recognition software and copy and pasting the text it gives you into the translation box (which works best with typed text, but still isnt perfect). Still overall, this app has been absolutely instrumental in my Japanese learning experience, and has been really useful when translating manga for fun. Since its so readily available, Ive been able to easily find out what that weird word was when watching Japanese shows, as well. Its a lovely, lovely companion to have.

There arent enough superlatives

Im one of those people who never writes reviews, which is not to my credit. However, I have felt increasingly guilty about not supporting this app given how superb it is as well as how essential it is to my study of Japanese. I use it every day, many multiple times a day. The handful of other reviewers all outlined the beauty of this apps capabilities far more eloquently than I ever could. Read those 7 other reviews for specifics. But I can tell you, there is nothing better out there for the serious student of Japanese. Everyone who sees this app wants it, not least of all because it is gorgeous and works so incredibly well. Many thanks to the developer, and many apologies for not having written a review sooner. This app has saved me, entertained me, and taught me more than I could ever list. どうもありがとうございました!✨

Missing word

Please add the word "thirsty" to the dictionary.

Next best thing to an electronic dictionary

Need to figure out some kanji, but dont have an electronic dictionary at hand? This is the next best thing!
